Former President Barack Obama is no stranger to making history. Chief among his accomplishments is becoming the first African American POTUS. However there were many other firsts in his presidency. He was the first sitting Pres to visit Hiroshima, first to publish an academic paper, first to have a Twitter account & the first to sit Between Two Ferns.
But he also did something that earned him a lifetime membership from the American Homebrewers Association.
In January of 2011 then President Obama purchased a home brewing kit and with help from, among others, White House Chef Sam Kass Obama became the first US president to brew beer on the grounds of the White House. The result was White House Honey Ale which used a modified recipe from a local brew shop & used honey from beehives that were kept on the South Lawn. The beer would go on to be served at, among other events, a Super Bowl party where 10 gallons was produced for nearly 200 guests.
But the beer was not just for large events. In 2011, after learning he’d be presented with the MOH USMC Sergeant Dakota Meyer & Obama privately shared a WH Honey Ale at Meyer’s request.
History shows that Obama was not the first president to take interest in beer. George Washington gave home brewing a shot at his place at Mount Vernon. While Thomas Jefferson was known to have brewed beer at Monticello with locally purchased malt & hops. FDR signed the 21st amendment ending prohibition & Jimmy Carter legalized homebrewing for personal & family use. However, no president had actually brewed beer at the White House.
Obama & Co. would go on to produce a Honey Brown Ale, Honey Blonde Ale, & a Honey Porter ale.
Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request the recipes for each are now public.
