Beer Fact of the Week - The Importance of the Glass (Best of the Rest)

American Pint: This one is ubiquitous. Order a draft Bud or Miller Lite from a bar odds are it’s coming in the iconic American pint glass. Also referred to as a Shaker Glass, the pint glass holds a pint of beer (how lucky is that?!?) & is tapered wider at the mouth for optimal aroma surface area. Its shape is ideal for cleaning & storing.

The Bierstiefel aka Das Boot: This bad boy is an all timer. So legendary that movies have been made whose plots revolve around simply drinking from it. It’s Incredible & grandiose. As well as other adjectives! Rumor has it the glass boot was designed after a hazing ritual in the German Army where new recruits would be forced to drink beer out of the gnarliest boot that could be found (typically off of someone's foot). This created uncommon camaraderie amongst the ranks.

Goblet: Thought to have been around since the 15th century, this type of glass could be described as a beefier, heavier brother of the Snifter as the designs appear to be similar. However, the Goblet has thicker walls & a more robust stem. The “bowl” of the goblet is globular with a wide mouth that suits darker & maltier beer styles along the lines of bocks & Belgian Ales.

Thistle: This somewhat bizarre looking glass is named after & shares its shape with the national flower of Scotland. Specifically the involucre of the plant, the green spiny part that gives way to the purplish flower, which, from the stem, becomes bulbous before tapering inward to the “mouth”. Given its design it’s unsurprising that this glass is perfect for Scottish ales & heavier beers. The taper is intended to keep the foam from dissipating, trapping aromas longer therefore enhancing each sip. Its bulbous shape near the stem is intended to allow optimal swirling which creates additional foam, allowing aromas to linger much longer than a typical pint.
