If you live in Northeast Ohio, you’ve been hearing it for years. A solar eclipse will occur precisely between 3:13 p.m. and 3:17 p.m. tomorrow, April 8th, 2024. But our viewing area is a little special. You see, we, NE Ohio, are in the path of totality making it not just a solar eclipse but a Total Solar Eclipse. This awe-inspiring phenomenon occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely blocking its light for a brief period, casting a shadow on our small blue dot. But here's the key: only a small region on Earth experiences a total eclipse. This area is called the path of totality.
During totality, the Sun's blinding light is extinguished, and we are treated to a breathtaking sight. The sky will darken dramatically and the Sun's corona, its wispy outer atmosphere which is normally hidden by the Sun's brilliance, becomes visible. This ethereal layer shimmers with a pearly white light, adorned by delicate streamers stretching out into space. It's a glimpse into the Sun's fiery heart that is rarely seen.
The sight of a total solar eclipse is breathtaking even today, but for ancient civilizations, it was a mysterious and often terrifying event. Lacking scientific explanation, they developed fascinating traditions and myths to explain the temporary disappearance of the sun.
Chinese astronomers were some of the earliest to record eclipses, with records dating back over 4,000 years. Their explanation was a celestial dragon devouring the sun! As the sun was being devoured onlookers would bang drums and pots, hoping to frighten the beast and restore light. Thankfully, the noise would always frighten the beast away. This event has been referred to as The Dragon’s Feast.
The Inca people of South America revered the sun god Inti. A solar eclipse signaled Inti's displeasure, and leaders would attempt to appease him with sacrifices. They believed a complete eclipse, especially if accompanied by an earthquake, could herald the end of the world.
In America we drink specialty eclipse themed beer to honor the glory of the event. Thankfully, given that the path of totality won’t come back around to our region for another 450 years there are plenty to choose from this year.
